QUOTE OF THE DAY
"We are all inventors, each sailing out on a voyage of discovery, guided each by a private chart, of which there is no duplicate. The world is all gates, all opportunities." Ralph Waldo Emerson
An early Happy New Year to all. After a good week of training and looking forward to the Oakville 5km resolution walk tomorrow, I thought that now may be the time to post my walking and personal fitness goals for the new year
So here we go--I guess one is committed once you put them in print.
1)To maintain or improve my current level of fitness -- in order to improve I would like to drop another 9 lbs which would take me down to 171lbs -- a loss of 80 lbs since my starting point in januaryy of 2006. Also I would like to solidify and maintain a 32in waist and drop my body fat % down to about 10% which would mean an 18% drop since my starting point.
2) Competition Performance Goals
To complete the following race distances in the outlined goal times
5 km = or less than 34mins
10 km = or less than 1:09:00
21.1 km = or less than 2:20:00
42.2 km = or less than 5:00:00
3) To provide a positive role model and be a vocal advocat for this sport that I owe so much too
AND I ALMOST FORGOT
4) To get close to Lee Scottt in a Half Marathon or the 15 km Midsummer Nights Run
5) To do the Ottawa Half Marathon with my virtual son Bryan K --- by the way Bryan, I wont be age division we go for -- it will be for all the marbles -- Remember -- Age is no barrier!
6) To either train or race with my other virtual friend Sarah --- I hope we can do the Chili together
7) To lead a successful Marathon Clinic and if successful, to do either another Marathon or a Half Marathon Clinic in summer of 07
Well thats it folks -- I dont know how realistic some of them are but they are goals to strive for and as I have said before "Goals are birdges to our Dreams"
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The significance of a man is not in what he attains but in what he longs to attain." Kahil Gibran
Here we are -- getting the table set for our New Year's Resolutions and goals -- I've got mine almost set ---have you????
A great workout at the gym this morning --0530am is a great time to start the day --I love the early hours at the gym and the comradary of the other early souls there -- a pretty determined group they are.. Did about 16km hill/speed work on the treadmill, plus my upper body and core circuit training punctuated with 5min intervals on the stairclimber between circuits. Loved it this morning --enough to be doing it all over again in the morning with my friend Todd

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall."
Confucius
Well, here it is Boxing Day -- everyone in a hurry to spend whatever money they have left after their Christmas splurging. The commercialization of this Holiday has really been grating away at me for a number of years and it continues to get worse each year -----and the "Christmas Spirit" --what is that now??? --after you drive once around a mall today and see what is happening in the parking lots and stores you will see the total lack of respect that is shown from one human to another ---what kind of world are we leaving as a legacy to our children and children's children....The Chistmas Spirit is punctuated by one flipping the bird at another -----very touching, isn't it?????
Enough of my rant --- today, I was back in the gym before heading in to work overtime. I was really pleased to be back at it --- I had a really good endurance/speed workout plus some leg and core weight exercises -- happy with the 12.5km I accomplished. Todd wants to meet at the gym at 0530am tomorrow -- I am really pleased that he is sticking with the program and he is making significant progress.
I am also working on my goals for next year and my so-called resolutions as well which will be tied together I'm sure ---I hope to post them on the 31st.
Have a great day everyone --- I hope you avoid the anxiety of the malls

""WE " AND "THEY" NO LONGER EXIST. THIS PLANET IS JUST US. THE DESTRUCTION OF ONE AREA IS THE DESTRUCTION OF YOURSELF. THAT IS THE NEW REALITY"
---Dalai Lama
I guess the time of the year has brought me to a much more philosophical mindset -- if we all thought like this wouldn't the world be a much better place. I find that our fellow walkers and runners tend to me more "green" in their way of thinking -- slthough you wouldnt know by looking at a water station in a race.
I am so pleased today to see that Sarah is back in the groove and that Bryan K. has dropped under 218 lbs - that is awesome and both of them continue to be a source of motivation for me. I was a little worried about Sarah but her last two posts sound more positive --man, it's like worrying about my kids!!!!!!!!
back in the gym again the last two days and really enjoying it --today Todd was with me -- I talked him into a gym membership a month ago and he is down 10 lbs as we speak--it is great to see that kind of progress from someone. He has joined the Marathon Walking clinic as well - going to be fun -- cant wait
12km yesterday and 14 today --- tried something new from the Runners world magazine today -- hills with a twist -- increasing speed by 0.1mph every minute till you reach your max and then go down at the same rate and then do it all over again -- so I started at my long walk pace and worked up to my race pace and added o.2mph on -- a tough workout but very succesful -- I did this for 35 minutes --prior to this I did 3x20 hill tempo walks. I am really hoping this all will help my speed.
We will try it all again tomorrow ----Have a great night all----4 more sleeps

"ATTITUDE IS A LITTLE THING THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE"
Well all it is only a few days till the big guy in the red suit drops by. I hope he brings me a couple of new pairs of shoes - I am in terrible need of them --- I have gone through 5 pairs this year and that amazes me -- of course with almost 4000km of training and races I guess it does add up to worn out shoes.
I am now back at it full throttle with my training -- took Saturday off and went to the gym with Todd sunday morning and then did my long walk with Glenn on Sunday --so l21km for the day -- I could still feel some of the tightness from Vegas so we did not push it . Yesterday and today however I got to the gym early in the morning and along with some core weights I began my quest for more speed stamina --- both workouts were intense and very rewarding - about 12km each day using top four possible inclines on the treadmill and speed intervals with it as well. Felt great and looking forward to doing it again tomorrow.

"COURAGE DOES NOT ALWAYS ROAR--SOMETIMES IT IS THE QUIET VOICE AT THE END OF THE DAY SAYING 'I WILL TRY AGAIN TOMORROW'"
That one is for all of us who have those days where we really question our training or are having off days in our training. This was prompted by some comments that Sarah had made in her blog recently about her battles with her training.
Remeber -- in life or in training --"IT ISN'T THE DESTINATION THAT COUNTS - IT IS THE JOURNEY"
Well, I finally got back to my own training yesterday after taking 3 days off after Vegas. Yesterday and today I did treadmill hill interval training which is becoming my favorite workout -- it is such a great endurance workout and after Vegas I swear by my endurance workouts -- now I am just pumping up the speed to combine speed and endurance --- that is my primary goal now -- to increase my stamina and speed. So yesterday, I did a touch over 11km and today just over 13km plus doing some core weights. It sure felt great to be back at it --cant wait to do a long walk with my training partner Glenn on the weekend. He and his wonderful family were a great source of support for Vegas and I am looking forward to be able to see them and thank them
Have a great weekend everyone --only 9 shopping days left till the big guy in the red suit shows up.

"THE PAIN OF FINISHING IS MINIMAL COMPARED TO THE EMPTINESS OF QUITTING"
Well all - here I am back from my first ever marathon in Las Vegas --- all were correct in saying "savour the moment ---there is nothing like your first -- there will be only one first marathon" Thanks Bryan for those words - you were so right ----I cant even put into words the emotion I felt when I crossed the finish line --heck even at the start line I had tears in my eyes thinking of what I was about to embark on and the journey I had taken to get there. Crossing the line I was totally in tears -- and so were those around me who had come to watch --- who knew from whenst I had come -- the hours of training, the kilometers on pavement and the treadmill. When I crossed the line I said I could not believe I had finally done it -- this was one goal I was going to set and reach --- one of those bridges to our dreams.
Ouitting was never an option -- come Hell or High water I was going to finish -- but here we are at the start line -- over 16,000 people in 3c temperature in horrific winds -- at that time, I was asking waht I had got myself into. It took 27minutes to get from our corral to the start line as we went from a 4 lanes on Las Vegas Blvd funneling across the start line.
It was a well organized race, the expo was phenomenal, the goodie bags were the best I have ever seen ---one complaint --- they had led us to believe there was a "racewalking" categorie but we found out at the expo that had been cancelled due to lack of marshalls to monitor running walkers --- oh well, the almost 1600 walkers gave it all we had anyway and proved what we were made of. That 1600 is a guesstimate based on info from one of the organizers I had a chat with at the reception after the race which was another nice touch--- and well done as well.
A very picturesque course with lots things to watch. People were great - lots of water stations - every mile or 1.6kms----and entertainment from start to finish - Elvises, bands, cheerleaders etc etc etc. A great time - I would recommend this race to anyone.
At the 33km mark after fighting the wind for 14km from the 12km mark to about the 22-23km mark I was seriously considering my options. As I said I had planned this race on this date as it would have been my father's birthday had he still been alive. At this point in the race, I was seriously hurting - and in tears, I looked to the sky for direction from my dad and asked him for a sign --- true story ---at that exact time I passed a competitor who had on the back of his race shirt in magic marker the quote at the start of this blog--"the pain of finishing is minimal to the emptiness of quitting'------THAT was my sign -- Thanks dad I needed that and off I went.
Any way --enough for one night - I must sign off and I will attach pictures tomorrow
BY THE WAY-----HERE ARE MY RESULTS
GARMIN TIME-- 5:11:21 + POTTIE TIME = OFFICIAL CHIP TIME 5:17:12
Saturday, December 09, 2006
Well, here we are in the bright lights of Vegas -- it is an awesome place -- arrived here about 930pm Vegas time after a 4&1/2 hour flight from Charlotte North Carolina --- after a 1 hour flight from Toronto -- Man I hope we dont go off course that much in the race tomorrow.
Up early this morning -- going to the fitmess center in the Aladdin where we are staying and will do 3 or 4 km on the treadmill, some basic core weights and then off to the expo at the Mandalay Bay
Getting really excited -- hard to rest but going to try my best ---- great places to pasta load tonight
Have a great day folks -- hope to talk at you tomorrow

QUOTE(S) OF THE DAY - I COULDNT DECIDE SO HERE ARE TWO
"WHAT LIES BEHIND US AND WHAT LIES BEFORE US ARE TINY MATTERS COMPARED TO WHAT LIES WITHIN US"
"A BUMP IN THE ROAD IS EITHER AN OBSTACLE TO BE FOUGHT OR AND OPPORTUNITY TO BE ENJOYED .... IT IS ALL UP TO YOU"
Well folks this is the big weekend - am I excited - Just a bit!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the opportunity to be enjoyed for sure. I wont tell you my secret goal till after the race but if I am around the 5:20 mark I will be very happy - when I first got into this and set my goal as a marathon in Dec of 2006 I had set a goal time of 6:30--how things change with alot of training etc. I figure that I have done 90km training for every 1km of the race - I hope that is prep enough.
Another great quote I saw today is "GOALS ARE BRIDGES TO OUR DREAMS" --all those little goals during the past year have been those bridges to my dream race this weekend - every other race -5s,10s,15s and halves - and every km outdoors, hills, on the treadmill, every weight pushed in the gym , every clinic night -- all have been those bridges to the dream.
Thank you everyone for your support - it has been heart felt and I will carry it with me all the way. Glenn, Lin, Sarah, Allison, and Jenna - a special thanks to my training family and my "separated at birth" brother.
Thanks to all the Running Room walking forum fellow walkers - who have "walked a mile(or two) in my shoes" literally. Your support and good wishes have been touching - You guys are awesome
Sarah and Bryan K--------------a Special Thanks ---- for the extra motivation and support.
By the way - we should all take the time to read Bryans Blog -- terrific story -- between the two of us we have lost a whole person this year... TERRIFIC JOB Bryan ---yours is truely a inspiring story and one I will keep in mind on Sunday. Congratulation Bryan - 50lbs down and still going --- you will be a lean, mean walking machine (oh-maybe running too -I wont call you a traitor yet) by the time Ottawa comes --- I am really looking forward to having the pleasure of being each others pace bunnies for that race -- maybe we can talk Sarah into it as well -- How about it Sarah?????
Have a great weekend all --VIVA LAS VEGAS

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"UNLESS YOU TRY TO DO SOMETHING BEYOND WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY MASTERED YOU WILL NEVER GROW."
Well all, sorry I have been remiss in my blogs the last few days - but between work and simply laying back and visualizing the big event on Sunday I have not really been in the right frame of mind to spend much time on the computer.
A couple of cold workouts yesterday morning and this afternoon but I am really pleased with the results - I was able to do a 1:08 10km today and that was great for me as I proved to myself that my knee was back almost to where it was before Angus Glenn and that is a huge psychological boost and a worry off my mind.
I really appreciate all of the great email and support from everyone -Thanks all
We walkers are truely a huge and supportive family - Ain't it great. I will have my lap top with me in Vegas so the good Lord willing I will post after the race on Sunday.
Have a great weekend everyone - only 18 shopping days left till Christmas

"OBSTACLES ARE THOSE FRIGHTFUL THINGS YOU SEE WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR EYES OFF YOUR GOAL"
Henry Ford
If you want a great site for on line motivational coaching there is a free email book at www.empiricalcoaching.com -- the book is very interesting and this quote is a sample of the journey it takes you on.
Well, one week from today I will be in Vegas and my first marathon - now those pre-race doubts start to creep ;in to your mind but I am shoving them out as quick as they come in - I firmly believe that I have trained properly for the lat year, have enough race esperience, and more or less psychologically strong enough to do this - my friends best wishes from the forum, and my family and friends wishes will carry me through I am sure . It is fun being given all of these good luck charms from everyone - and I thank you all.
Did 6km in that God awful weathe yesterday morning -- now that was a real treat - today working overtime and stopping at the Running room to pick up some last minute Canada gear to wear proudly in Vegas
Have a great weekend all Allan

"OUR LIVES ARE NOT DETERMINED BY WHAT HAPPENS TO US, BUT HOW WE REACT TO WHAT HAPPENS TO US; NOT BY WHAT LIFE BRINGS TO US BUT BY THE ATTITUDE WE BRING TO LIFE. A POSITIVE ATTITUDE CAUSES A CHAIN REACTION OF POSITIVE THOUGHTS EVENTS, AND OUTCOMES. IT IS A CATALYST....A SPARK THAT CREATES EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS."
Cant say much more than that - attitude is the key -- my dad always used to say "I've got enough of my own attitude, don't give me any of yours" - although I don't think this is what the quote meant.
A good week of training outdoors this week - doing 10km plus each morning at just under race pace and I am very pleased with my progress - cant wait till next weekend.
The weather in Vegas has been very cool the last few days - lows of 2 highs around 10 ---awesome race weather if it stays that way --here's hoping - than it can warm up right after the race

" I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT ANY MAN'S FINEST HOURIS THAT MOMENT WHEN HE HAS WORKED HIS HEART OUT IN A GOOD CAUSE AND LIES EXHAUSTED ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE, VICTORIOUS!"
No training today - a second day of rest - but back to my scheduled workouts tomorrow - 6km tomorrow, 10 Wednesday, 10 Thursday, rest Friday, 16 Saturday and 6 Sunday. Next weekend it will be maintenance mileage - 6 Tuesday, 10 Wednesday and then rest until I do 5 km on Saturday in Vegas to get my body aclimatized and then race day
At the end -- I hope to bring this quote to reality - I will leave it all on the course - at least thats the plan

SARAH - THIS ONE IS FOR YOU- RE "GOALS"
"IF ONE ADVANCES CONFIDENTLY IN THE DIRECTION OF THEIR DREAMS, AND ENDEAVORS TO LEAD A LIFE WHICH THEY HAVE IMAGINED, THEY WILL MEET WITH SUCCESS UNEXPECTED IN COMMON HOURS"
I know that Sarah has said on her webpage in the past few days she has been struggling in her training ----but Sarah if you look at this quote you are already there - and look at those you have influenced along the way - and I for one am thankful for the impact you have had on me - keep smiling and stay focused on your goals - dreams can and do become reality.
No training today as I worked overtime but did do 17km with Glenn yesterday and I was reasonably happy with the results - should support a 5:15 marathon which is my dream!!!!!
Glenn and I had an interesting philosophical discussion about the changes this sport has brought to us --- we talked about how as older generations often slow down or cease activity as they age --we on the other hand have increased our level of activity and competition -- as I said to Glenn "THE GRIM REAPER BETTER BE ONE HELL OF A RACEWALKER IF HE WANTS TO CATCH UP WITH ME!!!"

"BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. YOU GAIN STRENGTH, COURAGE, AND CONFIDENCE BY EVERY EXPERIENCE IN WHICH YOU STOP TO LOOK FEAR IN THE FACE...YOU MUST DO THAT WHICH YOU THINK YOU CANNOT DO"
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
Now how poetic is that when you are beginning to battle the psychological demons in preparation for one's first full marathon - I will surely be looking fear in the face -- ie the fear of failure.
Some great workouts in the last couple of days - 15km yesterday and 10km today --both at tempo and I was quite happy with the progress particularly with the knee
A long walk with my training partner Glenn tomorrow - probably not as long as usual but around 23km would be good and then work overtime on Sunday getting back just in time to watch the NFL late game
Cheers all -- have a great weekend

MISSION POSSIBLE - LAS VEGAS MARATHON
Yesterday, was a pretty intense workout at the gym ---my usual hill/interval workout plus strength as well--I got in about 14km before I had to call it a day -- a little under the weather today so I stayed in bed this morning and got some much needed rest. I am really aware of my knees right now and not only am trying to strenthn them but also trying not to further tweak them---it is a rocky road--- a fine line between the two
When I got into this my whole goal was to complete a marathon in December of this year and I am only tow and a half weeks away from doing that---a long 18 days of anticipation.
Sarah and Bryan --thanks for the support through this - wish you could be there with me.

MISSION POSSIBLE - LAS VEGAS MARATHON
Well it has been a few very busy days since I have lated posted on this site-although I have been intently watching Sarah and Bryans blogs with interest.
Although I have not been posting I have been training very hard for Vegas. After hurting my knee it has taken me awhile tol get back up to speed but last week I was able to work out at speed most of the wekk and got about 85km in for the week. Got in a total of about 30km in yeaterday and am happy with the results - that was my last real long walk beofre Vegas as According to my schedule I should start to taper now although I think I will probable still do a long walk with Glenn on Sunday and some of the other folks in my clinic who are eager to get started before January
I think this is a very timely quote today as I get ready to face the unknown of my first full marathon---I think I have followed my training plan and fitness/endurance plans well over the alst year to get myself ready for this and in 3 short weeks we will know if my plans were conceived in reality.
A great week yet hectic at work last week with the new position. Then yesterday dinner at Glenn andLin's home which was awesome and Glenn found a book of quotes for me that are awesome --- Thanks Glenn
Sorry about the Als Sarah --- and sorry about the CFL -- a bad season of poor football climaxing in a boring and poorly played Grey Cup - I hope they can fix the league

"If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain."
-Dolly Parton
It may be Dolly Parton but it sure is true -- we all have to put up with the trials and tribulations if we want to succeed. I guess the last week or so has been my "rain" with the stress of the competition at work and also the set back of the knee injury from Angus Glen. Fortunately I have seen the rainbow this week - with being fortunate enough to land the promotion and more importantly today getting my speed back and doing 10km in 1:08:00 which made me very pleased.
Sarah and Bryan have been talking about how they think more when they are running then when they are walking. I dont run at all because of my previous knee replacement --- however I have found that I lose myself in thought expecially when I am doing walks of 10km or more -- yes, I do have my music on but I even tend to get so deep in thought that I dont hear the music. I hav found these walks to be a psychological life saver for me allowing me to take any negative energy around me and channel it into training/racing energy. My walks have become my time to reflect on the changes in my life, time to problem solve, and resolve inner conflicts. It may not save the world - but it does help save my sanity -- a great way to battle Seasonal Affective Disorder-- a problem a lot of people around us will soon begin to experience -- maybe we can direct them toward this great sport of ours and help them towards wellness as well.

QUOTE OF THE DAY(S)
“A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.”
~ Larry Bird
Well I guess I have been a little lazy the last few days regarding my posts here - actually I can rationalize it well - I was sworn to secrecy by HR at work as I was offered the management position and I was dying to tell someone and I know I would have blown it by talking about it here ---but today it was all made official - so I am now out of the safety net of the bargaining unit and in to managementt--BUT I HAVE BEEN DOING MY HAPPY DANCE
And I am back into my training for Las Vegas and my knee, although not 100%, is much better and I have been able to do 12km per day the last three days with little discomfort. Next Sunday will be my last real long walk before Vegas and I will probably do 32km - thats the goal anyway.
I have been able to make contact with some people who are looking to do the same times as I am in Vegas and we will meet the day before and hopefully do it together--they are runners but who knows --maybe I can convert them!!!!!
One last thought about the new position at work - I had thought I did well in the interview ---in hindsight I thank this sport for that --the self confidence I have gained through all the training and success in competition has everything to do with that..........What a bonus

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Confucius "Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart"
I guess you can tell that this picture was taken close to the finish line at Angus Glenn - by this time my knee was really affecting me mentally from the twist near the start of the race. I certainly have broken my stride and my style has deteriorated but all I am concerned about is the final 100 meters and getting across the line.
I was at the gym yesterday and I think I may have pushed it a little too much - but resting it today will help and by days end yesterday the knee felt pretty good. Glen and I are doing our long walk tomorrow--but at a more leisurely pace then we usually do.
The interview went really well on Wednesday - results to be made public today or Monday - keeping my fingers crossed - I can be happy that I gave it my best shot ---Just like in a race --I had nothing left when it was over as I left it all on the course

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Sandra Carey "Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living, the other helps you make a life. ."
Well today is the big day - hopefully the interview goes well -- one of the things I have found with my training is the impact it has had on my life overall - particularly at work I have found that I handle stressful situations with a smile on my face and I am able to express and feel more confidence in myself - hopefully this shows through today.
A great early morning workout - took it easy on the treadmill to test out the knee and was happy with the results - did 6.4km relatively pain free -- will try mor tomorrow ---Very proud of my friend Todd who was with me again this morning at 5am and once again did a great job

One more day of rest today and back at it tomorrow - the knee feels much better after lots of ice and elevation last night. It is not perfect but then again my knees never have been having already had one full knee replacement.
The big interview is on Wednesday -- this one is a psychological struggle--do I or do I not really want this at this point in time??? We shall see what tomorrow brings

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Similarities create friendship's while differences hold them together."

Thanks to the support of these friends I made it through yesterday. Today, I don't feel as good as I usually do after a race as it appears my knee is worse than I originally thought. A very tough night trying to sleep but I have been down this road before. I went to the gym early this morning to ride the bike for 30 minutes to stretch out the knee and then sat in the jacuzzi and sauna for quite awhile. It seems to have loosened it up a bit. So a few easy days before I start walking again but will still do my strength workouts.

Albert Schweitzer "In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit." Thanks to Ellen Fletcher
It was a tough but very enjoyable race at Angus Glen today. It was a much more difficult race than I had imagined - the terrain was much more "rolling" and more climbs than I expected. Also they sent me 300metres out of my way at the 3km mark requiring a quick change in direction during which I tweaked my left knee - I was not happy..but one of the ladies I have raced with before told me to put it behind me and just go - so I did!!!! I owe her big time as I was able to kick it into high gear and when all was said and done I was 1st overall open division with a PB of 2:24:50. The rest of my group did real well a well with all 5 having PBs --- Awesome day ---- now to rest and ice the knee and get ready for Vegas.
I would reccomend this race to one and all --- lets swamp them with walkers next year --- Pass the word

Tomorrow is the Angus Glenn Half Marathon ---the last race before the Las Vegas Marathon on Dec 10----The weather forecast is semi-optimistic and apparently the course is "rolling hills" - good prep for December.
I just wish for tow things tomorrow ---Courage and a Pacemaker

I am just going to have a realxing morning before going to work this morning - give my legs a break before doing a short walk, maybe 5 or 6 km tomorrow morning to stretch out for Sunday. I have to work overtime in the morning tomorrow so it will be an early walk--and then to carb load!!!
The next 4 weeks will be pretty intense as I will be doing my final prep for my first matathon in Vegas - have my training routine set and am looking forward to the challenge.
I was really pleased to hear back from Sarah(Canadaianracewalker) last night and she has agreed to speak at my clinic in the New Year - AWESOME - thanks Sarah
Cheers all and have a great weekend

The Six W's: Work will win when wishing won't. -- Todd Blackledge
Had a great early morning workout at the gym with Todd this morning - he is doing very well and it is great to see.
As you can tell from the cartoon I am looking forward to my pre race carb loading on Saturday night.
Had an awesome day at work as well - may actually have a realistic chance for a more permenant supervisory role - the big interview is next wednesday - I hope to use the excitement as positive energy at Angus Glenn.
I am also spending time organizing the curriculum for my upcoming Marathon walking clinic. I am hoping that Sarah(CanadianRacewalker) will accept my invitation to speak at the clinic in the new year. I think her message would be motivational.

"When you run a race, you hurt your ability to compete when you turn your head to look at the competition chasing you, you lose a step physically and psychologically. Run the race always stretching to do your best, imitations will come in last, no one ca catch an original."
Nothing more to say today other than it is a relaxing rest day - Todd and I will hit the gym tomorrow morning after which I have to go to the Doctors for a medical for my license as with my classification you need one every three years.
The weather looks promising for the race this weekend. Really looking forward to it

Well Sarah --- this one is for you ---I couldnt resist the cartoon --- not only do we have to listen to our bodies but to our shoes as well
A great speed workout at the gym today - following my pre Niagara race routine -hope it works as well for Angus Glenn

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"You have to find something that you love enough to be able to take risks, jump over the hurdles and break through the brick walls that are always going to be placed in front of you. If you don't have that kind of feeling for what it is you are doing, you'll stop at the first giant hurdle." -- George Lucas, Film Director and Producer
It isnt as easy as you would think for sure - this morning, although I feel physically great after yesterdays long workouts, I couldnt get myself up so it is just a planned rest day --I look back at my pre race prep the week before Niagara and I did the same thing -- so I will follow that weeks pattern and hope for the best.
The greatest thing this morning though is I confirmed my flights for the Las Vegas Marathon on Dec 10th/06----I'm committed now for my first full marathon -I am so excited --cant wait for it to happen - 5weeks and the count down has begun

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Goals: There is no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There is no telling what you can do when you believe in them. There is no telling what will happen when you act upon them." -- Jim Rohn, Author and Speaker
Today was a terrific day of training with friends. I started the day with a 2hr workout at the gym with my supervisor from work. Todd was the first to register for my Marathon clinic which begins in January 2007 in Oakville. He has wanted to start getting in shape now so today was his intro to the gym and my workouts - he did really well and it looks as if he will join my gym and we will be able to continue working out together. It was a great feeling to help get someone motivated to make that committment to change and health.
I spent the most part of the afternoon doing my long walk with my friend Glenn who along with his wife Lin are also taking my clinic. Unfortunately Lin is nursing an injury and couldnt train with us and wont be able to do Angus Glenn next weekend---but she will be back.
Good friends and great workouts---an awesome day.....By the way --got 32km in in total today as well. Very happy with that

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Don't be afraid of the space between your dreams and reality. If you can dream it, you can make it so." Belva Davis, Award-Winning Journalist
I guess I am beginning to become philosophical - never too late I guess. We really need our deams and our goals or we have nothing to prepare for. If I dont have another race on the horizon I feel at a loss - so I always have one more race or one mor clinic to look forward to, to prepare for, to train hard for and to visualize.
A great morning at the gym today - followed off by some time in the jacuzzi and sauna - a great way to spend a saturday morning. Looking forward to the long walk tomorrow.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face...You must do the thing you think you cannot do." -- Eleanor Roosevelt, 1884-1962, Social Activist and Former First Lady
Sarah, when I found this one this morning I thought of you and your recent discussion about racing ---hope you find this one appropriate and useful.
Today was proof to me that my recent extra focus on speed and endurance is working. I did my daily strength workout and then headed out to do 10km and see how fast I could be on my own in a training session and if I had the endurance to keep the speed. I was really happy with the results - a PB training time for 10km of 1:06:46..................I cant wait until next weekend at Angus Glenn- I am going to do my long day with Glen on Sunday as well as introduce my boss to the gym in the morning. Then I will do the same routine next week as I did before Niagara to get ready for the race.
Have a great weekend all--------------Cheers

Every achiever that I have ever met says, "My life turned around when I began to believe in me." -- Dr. Robert H. Schuller, Minister
Often I see and read of people who emulate the cartoon above and then I read this quote - when we believe in ourselves everything else is easy and we have no difficulty getting it together to train.
I was asked at the gym today what drives me - and I tried to figure what it is that has got me to the point I am at now --and I guess it is 3 things SELF-DISCIPLINE, PERSERVERANCE AND DEDICATION. After this past weekend, I really believe in me and that anything is possible ---THE HARDER I TRAIN, THE EASIER THE RACE.

"The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to achieving your dreams." -- Og Mandino, 1923-1996, Author
Somedays nothing else needs to be said----and this is one of these days

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"People who say that life is not worthwhile are really saying that they themselves have no personal goals which are worthwhile...Get yourself a goal worth working for. Better still, get yourself a project...Always have something ahead of you to "look forward to" - to work for and to hope for."
-Maxwell Maltz
The next one to look forward to is Angus Glenn - cpaturing what I did on Sunday is something I dont think will happen but that is the goal - to repeat or better by even one second the Niagara time. I really have to work on keeping my stride and form down the stretch as I seem to lose it in the last couple of kms - at least I had my head up and was focusing on the finish line.
Sarah sent me a very nice email -- and reminded me to listen to my body ---so I did this morning and it was telling me to workout so off to the gym --some weight training and 14km hills and intervals on the trusty treadmill --back outdoors tomorrow..........I feel great......Bryan thanks for the kind words as well --we'll break the barriers together in Ottawa next year
Cheers all

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in life, you will have been all of these."
-George Washington Carver
This is such a great philosophy-------and the older we get the more we become painfully aware of the reality of it all.
Today is simply a rest day before getting back into the work out routine - I have noticed before if I take too much time off, like Sarah has also said, my energy level decreases and my body begins to crave the workout - so back at it tomorrow.
One more day to reflect on yesterdays race. In the picture to my left is Lee Scott - one day Lee I will get closer to you ----One has to have GOALS
Sunday, October 22, 2006
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Winning is nice, but you savor that victory for an evening and it's gone. Competing well is just not to be equated with winning."
The Niagara marathon is over for another year ---It was a great walking division headed by Lee Scott--------she is just an amazing athlete -- she, of course, was in the top two -in fact, I am sure she was first overall --she even remembered my name which was so cool,
My personal results were far beyond my expectations ----I was 1st overall open male and even got a trophy - cool---a PB of 2:26:24 ---4:16 off of my previous best. I am so thrilled you wouldnt believe ----my tapering program worked last week and my mental focus was good.
The course itself was great ---very picturesque and the crowd of walkers was impressive - somewhere between 250-300.............RAIN though but not real cold and no wind to speak of ----my kind of weather....An incredible day
Now to savour it for the rest of the day and back to training for Angus Glenn is two weeks..............What a great experience this sport is ---Spread the Word

QUOTES OF THE DAY
"Goals: There is no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There is no telling what you can do when you believe in them. There is no telling what will happen when you act upon them." -- Jim Rohn, Author and Speaker
"Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously and never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture!" -- Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, 1898-1993, Author of "The Power of Positive Thinking"
I think these are great quotes to take along with you to a race and carry with you on a daily basis.
Tomorrow is the big day - 21.1 in Niagara - it will be nice to hopefully meet some of the people who frequent the running room walking forum
The other great thing about tomorrow is that Lee Scott is in the race--when Lee is around she makes everyone better - I hope I can still see her by the end of the race-I jokingly told her once before this year that I only recognize her from the back because I never get any closer to her than that. It should be a great race - and with the weather forecast it may be a tough day for all. Cheers and good luck everyone.
Now off to do a little relaxing 5km and away we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The man who wins may have been counted out several times, but he didn’t hear the referee.Never quit or give up….never…..never give up." H.E. Janson
"Never give up, never give in, and when the upper hand is ours, may we have the ability to handle the win with the dignity that we absorbed the loss." - Doug Williams
Not much else to say when you are coming up to a race weekend - these quotes I will carry with me on Sunday - It looks like the temp will be okay - I just hope it doesnt rain too hard or be too windy - you notice - for some odd reason the wind never seems to be at your back - Odd isnt it
A rest day today - will do i short walk tomorrow and pick up my race kit - I cant wait

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"You are the handicap you must face. You are the one who must choose your place."
James Lane Allen
Coming to race weekend this is a pretty appropriate. I cant wait - had a great workout today - 6km in the rain and another 9.6 km interval hills on the treadmill - in a total of 1:43:27 - So I hope I am ready.
This is a picture of my son David - the one who will hopefully be well enough to do the race after going to the chiropractor - he is also a Professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter and Combat Zone Light Heavyweight Champion. A Father can should how proud he is of his son sometimes - Can't he????

In this life we get only those things for which we hunt, for which we strive, and for which we are willing to sacrifice.
George Matthew Adams
This weekend I am willing to sacrifice - for sure. I am more keyed up for this race then anyone I have done so far - more excited than my first half and more confident than my second one. Add the extra incentive of my son, his girlfriend and my step-son all doing the race with me - although they are running--It will be an incredible day.
Today was a rest day from training except for some core exercises at home - I will do a couple of workouts the next two days - just to make sure colthing issues are resolved - expecially socks and shoes.

"One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than fifty preaching it."Knute Rockne 1888-1931, Norwegian-born American Football Coach
Had a great workout at the gym this morning - decided to go semi-hard for 1:15 and see how far that got me - so I did hills and intervals with it - and I covered 11.4 km -----So I feel I am ready - bring it on Niagara, First race this weekend using the New Balance 110s - this will be and experience I am really looking forward to.
One year ago I was 251lbs when we were in Hawaii - today I weighed myself at the gym -smoething I dont do often anymore - but I was down to 181lbs - I am just AMAZED
Have a great day all

In sport, mental imagery is used primarily to help you get the best out of yourself in training and competition. The developing athletes who make the fastest progress and those who ultimately become their best make extensive use of mental imagery. They use it daily as a means of directing what will happen in training, and as a way of pre-experiencing their best competition performances.Terry Orlick American Peak Performance Expert, Trainer, Author
A more technical quote as I am starting to prepare for the big test on Sunday - I am really hoping for good race weather - which isnt alway good weather - if you know what i mean ---I am one of those that like a little drizzle - we shall see
A rest day today - going to the gym in the morning to do a little - still have to keep on track for the Marathon
Cheers all

"Every player I play with or against can teach me something, so I try to watch and learn. When we think we know it all is when we stop growing and becoming better"
Shannon Macmillan - 2000 Olympic silver medalist
Well it was a succesful training weekend - not as succesful as Sarah' s great race in Michigan - way to go Sarah
I think I am ready for next week in Niagara-did a variety of training over the last two days---14km yesterday in a variety of weather conditions in 1:36 and today did my long day with Glenn and Lin - did 21.1 with them and 10.9 home from their house - in a total of 3:46:12 - so I am quite happy with those training times .
Here's hoping the weather co-operates - primarily the wind - and maybe I will be fortunate enough to get a PB just as Sarah did today. Under 2:30:0o would be awesome - I hope that is realistic
Have a good week all Cheers

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"As you get older, your body doesn't act the same way it did when you were twenty, but you can still accomplish the same things. You just have to use your head a bit more"
Kristine Lilly 3 time Olympian - USA National Soccer Team
Now that is a bit of a shock - I have been told by numerous family members in the last year that "you're not twenty five anymore -use you head, be careful, you cant do what you used to" YES,I CAN - BY USING MY HEAD"
I am really trying to balance my Marathon training and trying to taper for my two halfs in the next three weeks - I guess the best way to do it is just consider the races as my distance day for that particular week of Marathon Training--we shall see how that goes.
Off to the gym shortly - it is cold this morning but I will do the 6km to and from the gym and do my upper body plus hips, shins, core and some bike time for endurance after the circuits
Tomorrow the plan is my long day with my training friends Glenn and Lin - I will probably do between 25-30km - we shall see what the body is willing to do and how the weather is.

"Laugh at your foibles, celebrate every step of your progress, and measure your success by how much fun your are having, not by how many medals you win"
Jayne Williams, author of Slow Fat Marathon
Well, it has been another busy work - agreeing to this temporary promotion at work has really changed my level of responsibility on a daily basis. So I am really benefitting from my workouts and roadwork as well - now they have a spectacular secondary purpose of stress reducer. I certainly can maintain my calm in crisis situations far better than I ever did before I began this program almost a year ago. There is the posibility that it may not be as temporary as I originally thought.
I had a great workout at the gym this morning including 10 plus kms of interval hill training on the treadmill - I did suprisingly enough really enjoy it today. Working on that pesky teardrop muscle over my knee as well as got some new exercises for my hips and shins and new stretches as well. All in all a very productive early morning at the gym.
Then my stepson and I headed for the Running Room and got him some new gear for the Niagara Half next weekend - some really good shoes, and other cool weather gear. He was thrilled with it and also has said he wants to do Angus Glenn with me.
By the way Angus Glen is 75% sold out if anyone is interested - Half Marathon, and 10km races - November 5-2006
Cheers all - Have a good weekend

"You cant have successes without disappointments. I think we learn that at some point, which helps us handle life's challenges with a positve attitude"
Tim Deboom - 2 time Hawaii Ironman Triathalon Champion
Just a day of rest for me today - trying to get the right combination of rest -workouts before the half in Niagara and then back to Marathon training hardcore.
Sarah - if you read this today -remember this at your race this weekend- your last race is simply that - Your Last Race - nothing more nothing less - simply a step in our journey where we were fortunate to learn something new - actually a blessing.
Good luck all this weekend

"I'VE LEARNED TO BE THANKFUL FOR EACH NEW DAY OF TRAINING AND TO NOT LET HARD TIMES DEFINE MY PERFORMANCES"
Jean Driscoll - eight time Boston Marathon winner, wheelchair division -tow time Olympic silver medalist
What else can possibly be said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess then it is Thanksgiving every day---------cheers all
